留学生essay title有哪七种形式？

For every person who reads the whole of the text of a scientific paper, twenty read through the Abstract of the paper, and about five hundred read the title of the paper and stop there. Most papers are read by title alone. （如果有1个人读整篇文章的话，20个人会读摘要，而500个人看到题目并就此打住。）

很多留学生在essay写作中不知道如何选择哪些形式的标题，下面Meeloun小编就给同学们分享七种给选essay标题的小技巧和相关注意事项，同学们快来看看！
1. Whenever possible, use a declarative rather than a neutral title 把题目改为说明性的陈述性的句子
说清楚本文讲了个什么事情，不要只说本文包含了什么
neutral title是什么样呢？如下：
Influence of aspirin on human megakaryocyte prostaglandin synthesis
只说了“影响”，没说什么影响。
而declarative title是：
Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis as a mechanism of action of aspirin-like drugs
点出了两者之间的关系“抑制”。
还有类似的
Birds on the rise
Improved survival in homozygous sickle cell disease: Lessons from a cohort study
Improved survival in homozygous sickle cell disease: Lessons from a cohort study
但是并不推荐适用如下的题目
Leaf damage decreases pollen production and hinders pollen performance in Cucurbita texana
因为一篇文章的结论并不一定是普适的，真理的，建议使用过去式
Leaf damage decreased … and hindered …
这种在题目中使用动词的办法将题目改成了完整的句子，这比通常的短语更加强烈有效。不过在描述性的研究中只能使用中性的短语，如：
Anatomy of the vessel network within and between the tree rings of Fraxinus lanuginosa (Oleaceae)
2. Titles ending with a question mark 标题结尾慎用问号
以前科学家阅读文章都是在纸质期刊上阅读，当他在目录中看到感兴趣的文章时可以直接翻到正文阅读，而现在的科研工作者都是在电脑上读文献，看纸质期刊的很少了，他们看到题目的时候有时候是无法获取全文的，甚至摘要也看不到，所以如果你以问句作为题目，如下：
Does gut function limit hummingbird food intake?
就不如直接告诉读者答案：
Limitation in hummingbird food intake by gut function
不过也有例外，有些综述文章是围绕一个问题展开的，而且并无定论，这时候以问句结尾还是比较合适的，如：
How long is a giant sperm?（Pitnick et al.， Nature，1995）
总之，慎用。
3. Begin with the keywords 把关键词往前放
不要把你要讲的疾病放到最后一个单词，因为这样的话，急性子的读者在阅读目录时往往没有耐心看到你到底讲了什么，举例：
Te effect of calcium antagonist felodipine on blood pressure, heart rate, working capacity, plasma renin activity, plasma angiotensin II, urinary catecholamines and aldosterone in patients with essential hypertension
28个单词的题目，前26个词都没有提到本文属于什么领域，要讲什么疾病。
如果把疾病放到开头，我们立马就知道这篇文章要讲什么，比如将上面的题目修改为：
Essential hypertension: Te effect of . . .
甚至题目里面不用具体交代那么多的指标，如血压心率等，是不是可以用更加精炼的词语代替。
4. Use verbs instead of abstract nouns 以动词代替抽象名词
下面这个是我们常常的做法：
Treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome
但是如果你把名词treatment改成动词，句子马上就生动起来：
How to treat . . .
5. Avoid abbreviations in the title 标题中避免适用缩写
柳叶刀杂志一直教我们不要在标题中适用缩写，但是作者在柳叶刀上找了个缩写的例子（虽然他们主编一直否认，并说这是一个玩笑）：
OCs o-t-c?
乍一看，这是什么鬼？其实看文章，其全称
“Oral contraceptives over-the-counter?”
或者更详细一点
“should pharmacies be allowed to sell oral contraceptives without a doctor’s prescription?”
但是有些简写是允许的，比如DNA，pH等使用广泛的缩写。
如果有疑问，可以在题目中同时交代全称和缩写，如：
Contaminated material caused Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) in some undersized children who were treated with growth hormone (GH)
其实也不建议多用，可以直接在题目中用全称，在正文需要的时候再定义。
6. A title for your thesis 使用博（硕）士论文的题目
作者再JAMA杂志上看到这样一个题目，既有主标题，又有副标题：
Antenatal diagnosis and treatment of fetal skeletal
malformations
with emphasis on in utero surgery for neural tube defects and limb bud regeneration
形象一点来说，在学位论文中你可以用主标题给你的亲戚/邻居/朋友等非专业人士看，然后用特定的副标题给领域内的专业人士看。但是在一般学术期刊要直接用专业的题目。
7. Running title 也叫栏外标题或者页头标题
一般标在每页页眉，比题目短，是题目的精简版，用来提示本研究主要内容，这样即使读者翻到文章的中间页面，也能知道这篇文章是关于什么的。
如下面的例子（López-Jaramillo et al.， Obstetrics &Gynecologcy，1997）
Title：Calcium supplementation and the risk of preeclampsia in Ecuadorian pregnant teenagers
Running titile：Calcium supplementation reduces preeclampsia
当然，如前面所说，这个结论并不是普世的真理，所以仍然建议将reduces改成过去式reduced。
另外，preeclampsia是一种状态，并不能被减少，所以，仍然应该加上risk of。
最后，这个running title 可以改为
Calcium reduced the risk of preeclampsia
