Statement of Objectives

Applicant’s Name: Lei Luo

Study Intention: M.A. Fall 2014

Preferred Advisors: Prof. Douglas G. Goodin, Prof. Marcellus M. Caldas

When I first heard the term “Remote Sensing” in the course Introduction to Remote Sensing, I thought it was something related to television remotes until my teacher used an application of it to illustrate remote sensing. There was a drought in an African country, where people were starving to death for the lack of food. The United Nations decided to send some food there before which they wanted to know how much food to send there. Remote sensing experts first evaluated the produce of rice or other crops in that country by employing remote sensing to calculate how much food was needed for survival, and then the UN would send the exact amount of food there. Though the job may sound easy, I feel it a great honor andresponsibility for it saves life and allows for no mistake. After that, I made up my mind to pursue my career as a remote sensing expert, which asks for in-depth studies in graduate school. Thus I want to first complete my graduate study abroad, and then continue to study for a Ph.D. degree.

I will get my diploma for Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science from China University of Geosciences (Beijing) in July 2014, and I have studiedcourses related to remote sensing, such as Introduction to Geo-information Science, The Principle and Methods of Remote Sensing,Remote Sensing Image Processing, Application of Remote SensingandRemote Sensing Software Practice, with an average score of 92.96.

Apart from taking theoretical courses, I have done many researches on remote sensing’s application in environment, vegetation and land use/cover. I also published several papers in these fields. Study on Geographical Change of the Economic Center of Beijing Based on Landsat TM Data, published on Huazhang, is about land use classification, economic and statistic models providing guidance to city planning. Ways to Improve the Accuracy of Land Use Classification for Mid-resolution Remote Sensing Data: A Case Study of Tongliang County, Chongqing City is a paper concerning multiple ways to improve the accuracy of supervised classification for moderate resolution satellite images. Vegetation Dynamic Monitoring: A Case Study of Yanqing, Huairou, Miyun District, published on Information & Communications, is aboutthe use of NDVI and method of pixel dichotomization in dealing with dynamic monitoring on forest variance.

With more spare timein the final year, I went to seek internship to explore more about remote sensing. Now I am a visiting graduate at Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences, working with researcher Zhang Xin, mainly responsible for remote sensing images processing, land use classification, inversion of environmental parameters and evaluation of models. We are researching object-oriented classification, inversion of environmental parameters, evaluation of human impact on land use change, ecology and environment in Jiulongjiang Basin region, Fujian Province, China.

I want to continue my study in environmental processes, physical geography and land use/cover by using remote sensing, GIS and spatial-temporal approaches. I’d like to work with Dr. Douglas G. Goodinand Dr. Marcellus M. Caldas, because we share many common research interests, and most importantly, they are excellent researchers with whom I will learn a lot of study methods and realize my pursuit of being a remote sensing expert. I recently read Dr. Goodin’s paper Identifying a suitable combination of classification technique and bandwidth(s)for burned area mapping in tallgrass prairie with MODIS imagery, in which pixel-based classification and object-based classification are compared. I also have done similar research on these two classification methods, and like SPOT 5, and for artificial land use, such as farm land, and not suit for mountain areas, in this case burned and unburned areas, because there are not many geometric properties. Studying and exploring methods to better understand the environmental processes, land use/cover are what I want to studyand I believe I can make a qualified researcher out of me under the instruction of Dr. Goodin and Dr. Caldas.

My research interest is to study land use/cover and physical geography by employing remote sensing and GIScience. Graduate study at the Geography Department, K-State addresses all these aspects, making it a perfect place to continue my future study where many research labs and facilities, such as GISSAL and Remote Sensing Lab, are available, which can facilitate my researches and study at K-State. The Geography Department at Kansas State University represents high academic and research ability in land use/cover, physical geography, remote sensing and GIScience. I will improve my research ability and devote myself to what I am interested in if I was given the opportunity to enter the Geography Department at K-State.

Personal Statement

I have keen interest in bake whose procedure, seemingly like that of law and accounting, is supposed to formulate a strict control of the process, steps, the quantity, etc. We may also harvest food even when we put a little more flour, egg, or milk, but it can never be the most delicious because even a slight add of such ingredients can almost result in the failure of the whole precess. Thus one should be very cautious about the bake procedure, so does the law and accounting.

During middle school, as a science student, I am extraordinarily interested in mathematics. And later I found myself enthusiastic about accounting after I chose the accounting course and the accounting law. Then I chose forensic accounting and forensic accounting practice which attracted more of my attention than before. Law and accounting is mysterious like clearing up a case in detective fictions or films. Law stands for fairness and justice in modern China, and Chinese people are now growing more and more aware of the importance of law in regulating a harmonious country. Also more and more people are committed to work for a legal society, and I am eager to be one of them. Chinese said that China has welcomed its spring of governing by law after the appointment of chairman Xi Jinping, and I am looking forward to add a ray of my brilliance to the splendid spring of legal society. Therefore, I am more than delightful when I found that LSE offers a master program in law and accounting.

In my college study, I have ever studied the accounting, accounting for lawyers, practice for forensic accounting and financial management in which I achieved high grades as more than ninety scores. Due to my study of science in middle school, I could not master the study method of liberal arts as good as others, but thanked to my diligence and unremitting endeavor, I made a great progress and won a scholarship in the third year. In addition, once I was assigned as an exchange student to study e-commerce and international business in California State University--Long Beach for a period of time, during which I fell in love with the teaching methods there and gradually accustomed myself to the teaching in English.

When it comes to my project or working experiences corresponding to the program I want to apply for, I figure out three relative events I have participated in. The first was my participation in the study of “the survey and analysis of the ‘three public expenses’ respectively in 2010 and 2011 in the national ministries and commissions” conducted by forensic accounting research center of China University of Politics and Law, where we collected as much data as possible and analyzed them horizontally and vertically. What impressed me most was our successful team cooperation without which we could hardly complete the project study in such a rapid speed. The second was my research of “ the portrait of Chinese corrupt officials: the statistics and analysis of the feature index of Chinese corrupt officials” whose most challengeable point was the collection of data for the limited collecting channels. I tried my best to search for statistics via websites and finally overcame such a big obstacle. Last, I have ever completed a labor arbitration case in which I endeavored to obtain 5000 yuan for a labor who did not sign a labor contract. The above-mentioned cases did help me accumulate experience in this field, but I realize the urgent needs for further knowledge in this field.

As an affectionate person, I occupy strong team spirit and service spirit. I experienced many times of volunteer activities: supporting the education in rural areas, being guide of the art gallery, being the volunteer of the international conference on long walk, and the volunteer of 60th anniversary of the founding of my university. I won praise and recognition from my teachers as well as from my classmates. With a cautious attitude and a strong sense of planning and time, I always acted as a planner or coordinator in team cooperation. When operating on a project, I would first communicate and negotiate with our team members before we made an important decision; when we occurred to have different ideas, I coordinated to solve the disputes and determined the trade-offs.

LSE is a well-known university around the world and its arrangement of law and accounting program attracts me deeply. I favor the combination of two majors because I can acquire further knowledge there. I want to apply law and accounting feasibly to actual life where I can shoulder some social responsibility and become a person of accomplishment. China is now in great needs of such comprehensive talents, and I hope my choice will make some difference to my motherland.

To whom it may concern:

I am a lecturer of Department of Information Engineering, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), and I have ever taught Luo Lei in the class of Remote Sensing Image Processing, Remote Sensing Introduction, City Planning. Based on his excellent performance at the university, I am honored and willing to recommend Luo Lei to study in your master program in the department of geography, Ohio State University.

Luo Lei was an active learner. I first met him in the first semester of his second college year when most of the major courses had not been offered to students, but he wanted to study by himself in advance, so he came to my office to ask me to give him some advice about how to achieve better in study and help him install software which he would need for future study. There were many software needed to be installed, including ArcGIS series, ENVI, ERDAS, Matlab and so forth, and none of them was easy to deal with. In order to install all of them, Luo Lei visited me in my office five times. He had a tight schedule and sacrificed his lunch or dinner time to install them so as not to take up my personal time. During those days, he also asked me to recommend some books and learning materials that would be helpful for his future study.

Luo Lei was strong enough to overcome difficulties in academic fields. He always tried his best to deal with obstacles in the process of finishing assignment. When I taught him the course of Remote Sensing Image Processing, I gave him a task to classify different land use in Tongliang County, Chongqing City. In the process, Luo Lei met many difficulties: one of which was the hazed images. He first went to the website of University of Maryland to try to download some non-haze data, however, these data are either too out of date to reflect the current situation of Chongqing or covered by even larger areas of haze, mainly because there are many rivers in the region and the humidity is heavy. In a word, he didn’t make it in this way. Then he tried another way. He googled a ‘haze tool’ and downloaded a nearly 20 pages instruction PDF about how to use this tool to get rid of haze. To his disappointment, the overall color of the image totally changed after using this tool, so he failed again. Finally, he knew from some papers that certain band combination is not affected by haze, and then he knew that it is because the wave length of certain bands is greater than the diameter of haze molecules. Later he learned Optimum Index Factor technique (OIF) could be used to determine the best band combination, so he finally get rid of the nightmare of haze.

And he wrote a paper about what he had done in this assignment which was latter published in a journal named KeHai GuShi BoLan. By the way, Luo Lei had two other papers published in Information & Communications and Huazhang respectively: one was “Vegetation Dynamic Monitoring: A Case Study in Yanqing, Huairou, Miyun District, Beijing City”, the other was “Study on Geographical Change of the Economic Center of Beijing Basing on Landsat TM Data”.

When  Luo Lei told me that he’d like to study abroad after graduation, I totally agree. I have seen the differences between the information engineering field in China and that in developed countries. So I totally support Luo Lei to study abroad.

I believe Luo Lei, as a top student with strong abilities in learning, agile thinking and diligent character, will make brilliant records in future studies and becomes an excellent researcher, I strongly recommend him and I will appreciate if you take his application into serious consideration. If you want to know more information about Luo Lei , please contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

Dear Sir/ madam,

In the capacity of a doctor in civil and commercial law, a deputy director of the civil law institute in the China University of Politics and Law, and the head teacher of Ms. Xu Ziao, I am writing to recommend her, one of my favourite students, to be admitted to your master’s program of Marketing.

I got to know Ms. Xu Ziao personally the year when I was appointed as her head teacher who had to pay close attention to students’ study as well as daily life. While in class, Ms. Xu maintained a good fellowship with all her classmates all the time and she was willing to give a hand to others who needed help. Studying with conscientiousness, Ms. Xu often came up with creative ideas. Unlike some other students, she studied not to just pass the exams but to really improve her knowledge and expertise. She stands out among her fellow classmates with an unmistakable thirst for genuine understanding of her own subjects. That has won her appreciation from not just me but my colleagues as well. But she did do well in exams too. In the final exam of last semester, she got high scores in her courses.

Apart from her strong talent in study, Ms. Xu was an affectionate person too. She participated in warm-giving activities such as supporting the education in rural areas, being guide of the art gallery, being the volunteer of the international conference on long walk, and the volunteer of 60th anniversary of the founding of my university. In these events, she delivered love and care to people and was rewarded with compliment and heartful gratitude from them. I was also moved by her affectionate actions.

Moreover, Ms. Xu demonstrated her potential as a researcher in a research program in which she performed excellently. In the national innovation project “China's Demographic Dividend and the Family Planning Policy--the Investigation of Single Family”, Ms. Xu demonstrated her strong team spirit and her close attention to the contemporary society. As the project progressed, her comprehensive ability in project planning as well as project research impressed me greatly.

Also I’d like to mention that Ms. Xu is good at communicating in both oral and written English. Some of her most important undergraduate courses were taught by American professors, many of whom considered her oral English as native and her written English as standard. I am sure that she has since improved her English even better in her professional life. So I believe she will be able to accustom study and life abroad very fast.

Finally, to my knowledge of Mr. Xu, I firmly believe she should make an outstanding student in graduate studies. If you accept her, you will find that her drive and sense of purpose very contagious among the students. In view of all that I know of her, I strongly recommend her. If you want to know more about her, please don't hesitate to contact with me.

Sincerely,

Professor and Deputy Director of the Research Institute of Fiscal Taxation and Finance Law of the College of Civil, Commercial and Economic Law, China University of Political Science and Law

Personal  Statement

We’re extremely fortunate

not to know precisely

the kind of world we live in.

—Wislawa szymborska—

So,everyone can explore the world in his/her own way.

I do believe that, to be a distinctive individual in the big world, we should clearly identify what we want to do most; and to be a successful person beyond other folks, we should work out what we can do best. Keeping the faith that only a person with great ambition and sufficient  ability can survive well in present-day society, I struggle perseveringly for updating professional  knowledge and skills which can support my study and future career in dreamful area.——That is my way to explore the world.

Early interest

When I was a little girl, my mother always took me as her audience to prepare work reports. She is in charge of individual finance in a bank. Thus, I have been exposed to financial affairs at a young age and the initial interest in this field generated in what I saw and what I heard.

As time goes by, I found finance was all-embracing and quite stimulating, which increasingly  strengthened my love for it. I’m a very persistent girl, especially in terms of those I extremely dream for. Just as I have always been crazy about the England-style lattice skirts since a little girl, my passion for finance has never diminished during my growth process. Now, I always take the initiative in asking my mother to “report” to me. As a consequence, I can know much specific work in financial institutions.

Current achievement

I’m a senior inHebeiUniversityat present and will get a bachelor’s degree in Economics in July 2010, majoring in Economic Applied Statistics. Our curriculum is extensive, including specialized courses on statistics and other relevant courses such as on finance, accounting, and economics as well. So, I’m rather familiar with the basic theory and practice of finance. Besides, the major I’m learning now requires a high level of mathematics and application of computer software, which enables me to be competitive and competent to further my study in Finance.

In order to get more achievement on my current major as well as my interested major, I got an effective study method thereby making full use of free time——Usually, I focus on information about finance, such as the bank rate or the world oil price, via Internet and library; then utilize  statistical tools to sort and analyze the data, and forecast the tendency——This method is very helpful to consolidate what I have learnt as well as to get new knowledge, and it  fosters my ability of studyong independently at the same time. Coupled with my efforts, I have done well in most subjects, achieving 87.5/100 for the overall GPA and winning the “Excellent Student Scholarship”.

Apart from excellent academic record, I know working experience is equally fundamental. So,  I strived for opportunities of related internships and part-time jobs in different companies. In the summer vocation of 2007, I worked in the QiLu Securities Company at the counter and primarily dealt with some basic service following veteran staff, including opening accounts,  hosting, withdrawing the designate trade and altering customer information,. Meanwhile, I also  learnt from staffs in asset management department about how to analyze market quotation and  develop investment strategies. As a result of these experiences, my ability to solve practical problems was improved, but more significantly, I developed a strong work ethic in finance field.

In addition, I actively took part in school and social activities. Some activities such as drama performance competition and debate competition provided perfect opportunities to show my comprehensive skills and self-confidence; while other experiences such as being the volunteer of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and a voluntary teacher in local deaf-mute school also enabled me to be more mature and dedicated.

When I was a sophomore, I joined a team to participate in "The Challenge Cup" Business Plan Competition. I was the leader of the unit which took charge of market surveys and feasible sales plans about our productan IPF-based intelligent static electricity removing instrument. Through the investigation and budget estimation, we found few people were willing to bear its high price, and it was also difficult to produce it by financing. That sounded a severe problem, but we didn’t give up. Instead, we worked together to reform the product so as to continue our business. During this period, I realized the importance of communication , cooperation, and perseverance to fulfill my dream.

Future plan

As to my long-term plans, definitely I am desirous of engaging in finance relevant industry like a bank. The greatest happiness is to do want we want to do, rather than what we have to do, isn’t it? So, I will always persist in my dream and never give up.

Last summer, I was required to complete an Academic Year Thesis when preparing for the IELTS test. It’s urgent but I did a good job as well. Then, I realized time was limited, especially when we desired to explore the unknown world. It’s one of reasons for my decision to study inU.K., which means I can be capable to enter society to fulfill my dream both effectively and efficiently. Another reason is that I would like to expand my outlook by experiencing dissimilar cultures and comparing different ideological and cognitive ideas, and only in this way, can I become a person who think independently.

Your university, famous as it is, is just my ideal place for its perfect academic research and living environment. Thus, I sincerely hope that I could have the opportunity to major in Finance at your prestigious university, not only to realize my dream of entering this beautiful and competitive school, but to be well-trained with the specialist skills and knowledge to achieve self-worth in my interested field as well.

The release of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1960 expanded people's quests to remedy environmental issues. Though a high school student, I was deeply touched by its beautiful but dolorous words after reading this book. With increasing curiosity in those challenging environmental issues, I chose environmental engineering as my major in my undergraduate education. In the college, I dipped into lots of professional information and gradually realized the shortage of environmental professionals inChina. Therefore, a decision was made in my mind that I have to obtain more advanced knowledge to become a college professor who can cultivate more talented people to protect our environment from pollution. Knowing this will bring me a great sense of accomplishment, I would like to join the Department of Environmental Engineering in your college for an advanced degree, as I think that an educational experience at your college will make me better prepared for my future career.(第一段长了点,开头两句话是我以前自己瞎想的,写得不好,不够吸引人,但我不知道该怎么改得吸引人一点。)

Majoring in environmental engineering, I achieved high scores in my specialized courses during my undergraduate studies, which set a solid background of environmental engineering for me. After becoming familiar with the different branches of this major, I became more focused in environmental microbiology and water-pollution control engineering. Being deeply attracted to these courses, I never had to worry about losing my focus in class.(我一直觉得最后一句话很狗血,根本就不能表现我对这个课程的兴趣,删掉的话这段话又嫌短了,不知道能怎么样改改,能不能帮我提点建议呀O(∩_∩)O~。)

During my undergraduate studies, the variety of experimental courses in physical, chemical, and microbiological disciplines also made me familiar with different experimental analysis technologies and instrumental operations. (我感觉前面这句话可以删掉了,对吗?)With interests in experimental experience, I started a research project with my mentor. The main goal of the project was to look into how to adsorb the pollutants in leachate. Using layered-double-hydroxide (LDH), I used low-cost cement to synthesis LDH, which has good ability of adsorbing solid-waste landfill leachate. (这句话前面有个using,后面又有个used,读起来是不是很重复很怪)The leachate contains harmful pollutants and is a tuff problem in solid-waste treatment. We finally obtained promising results from this project and received my mentor’s recognition. What’s more, with this project, I am probably going to have a publication next year. Although this project may seem to just be like solving a problem with solid waste treatment, it actually involved many technologies in wastewater treatment, such as measuring color and testing COD and the concentrations of nitrogen, chloride, and sulfate in the sample. So this study has ultimately benefited me greatly in the treatment of wastewater.

The internship I had during my third year of college with theShanghaiEnvironmentalMonitoringCenterwas a different experience for me. I participated in a project dealing with the treatment of theSuzhouRiver, one of the drinking-water sources ofShanghaiCity. In the biological department of theMonitoringCenter, I worked in the laboratory and analyzed the algae and micro-organisms in water samples from theSuzhouRiver. Through this work, I became aware of the serious pollution in theSuzhouRiver, which could jeopardize tens of millions of people’s health. I also started to feel that, although I had been trained for three years in water-pollution control through a series of treatment methods, the knowledge I had gained was far from enough to solve the emerging environmental problems inChina. Only through further education and research experience can I gain comprehensive, in-depth knowledge to impart to students.

In college, I also participated in the Environmental Protection Community, where I organized a number of interesting environmental activities, such as slow cycling, small animal care and so on. These activities not only improved my sense of teamwork and leadership but also increased my enthusiasm for environmental protection. In addition, I served as a volunteer education aide to teach children in remote, mountainous areas. This unique experience raised my sense of social responsibility. At the same time, it allowed me to practice my teaching ability and provided me precious experience toward being a qualified teacher in the future. In many cases, I interacted with international students, with whom,(改成from whom不知道行不行,因为后面有个with,我觉得挺重复的) I became familiar with the open and free style of American classes. Though it is a different way of learning, I think it attractive, since this particular style can provide me with new ideas to teach.(这段话没有写出具体的时间、地点,我怕人家会怀疑这些经历的真实性,我是不是应该把时间地点写出来?其实主要是我觉得简历上面都写了,这里就相对没有写得那么具体)

After carefully looking through your website about the Environmental Engineering Programs at your college, I found myself now a suitable candidate for a Master’s Degree study. I also think that this program can help me achieve my aspirations for my future career. I have read Professor XXX’s publications and raised great interests in his research field. I believe that my youth and unlimited energy will leave me much room for further development. I also believe that my learning capacity and research interests will inject fresh vitality into the project. With passions and spirits in research field, I also expect myself pursue a Ph. D. degree after I graduated as a Master student. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate your serious consideration of my sincere application. I can assure you that I am an excellent candidate who is suitable for your program.
